Downsizing in Hespeler Village, Cambridge

Hespeler Village is one of Cambridge's three core areas, a small main street on the Speed River with trails and a branch library nearby. For someone moving to less house, the questions are the housing on offer, the river and the distance to a hospital in another part of the city. Introductions on this site go to agents on the operating team at eXp Realty, so this is not a search of the whole market.

Hespeler Village at a glance

The City of Cambridge names Hespeler Village as one of its three core areas and says Queen Street has independent retailers and riverside views. The Hespeler Village BIA calls it the village on the river, against the Speed River.

The BIA's history page says Jacob Hespeler arrived in 1845 and bought land along the Speed River, that the village was incorporated in 1859 and the town in 1901, and that Hespeler joined Preston and Galt to form Cambridge in 1973. It lists a grist mill, distillery, textile mill and foundry among the early industries.

Homes in and around Hespeler Village

We have not confirmed any condominium, bungalow townhouse or apartment development in the village from a builder, condominium corporation or City source, so none is named here. Ask an agent for current listings and check each one yourself: one-level layout, steps at the entrance, whether it is freehold or condominium and what the monthly common expenses cover. Our guide to condo, townhouse, bungalow or life lease sets out the trade-offs.

For older homes, ask the City whether an address is individually designated or listed. Cambridge's three heritage conservation districts are Blair Village, Dickson Hill and Main Street, according to the City; contact heritageinfo@cambridge.ca with questions.
