North Dumfries Township at a glance

North Dumfries is one of the four townships in the Region, with Woolwich, Wilmot and Wellesley. The Township's own history page says it was established on January 1, 1973, through regional government restructuring, that William Dickson purchased the land in 1816 and named it after his Scottish birthplace, and that Ayr was established in 1824 at a mill junction and incorporated as a village in 1884.

Responsibilities are split. The Township, with offices at 106 Earl Thompson Road in Ayr, handles local services, recreation, planning and its share of property tax. The Township notes that roads are the responsibility of both the Township and the Region, and that the Region handles garbage and recycling. Library service comes from the Region of Waterloo Library. To start, call 519-632-8800.

Housing for downsizers in North Dumfries

This site has not found an official source describing the mix of smaller homes in North Dumfries, so this section sets out what to ask rather than describing a market. The Township's Official Plan names Ayr as its urban area and then a long list of small rural settlement areas, so the choice is often between a home in Ayr and a rural property.

  • Ask whether the home is on municipal water and sewer or a private well and septic system.
  • Ask whether it is freehold or part of a condominium corporation, and request the documents in writing. The guide to condo, townhouse, bungalow or life lease compares the structures.
  • Ask how you would get to a pharmacy, doctor and grocery store if you stopped driving, and whether stairs, a long driveway or a large lot will be work you want to keep.

The seller disclosure guide covers what Ontario sellers must tell buyers about latent defects.
